General Notes: General Info

Eva lived in the Bennett’s Valley area until 1929 when she moved to Ridgway.

Eva Estelle Winslow married a mercantile owner, Harvey Smith, of Sinnemahoning. The marriage was short-lived, and the couple separated before the birth of their son, Bruce Winslow Smith. Eva and the child remained at her parents? home in Benezette for a number of years before moving to Michigan. Eva made her living by sewing and keeping house, and eventually, she and her son Windy returned to Pennsylvania and lived in Ridgway. Eva was visiting her sister, Ella, in Michigan at the time of her death in 1967.

Bruce remembers —– Grandma (Eva) lived at the Winslow home for years with Dad (Windy). When Uncle Merton and Aunt Ada took over the farm, Dad was a young man, but had become the family laborer. Whichever of the uncles was mowing, or planting, or baling, that’s where Dad’s services were needed. Some of his tales of farm life were amusing, while others related just how tough times were for the family in the early part of the twentieth century. At some point, Grandma and Dad moved to Michigan. When they moved back to Ridgway, they lived in a house where Grandma could make a living as a seamstress. Later, she kept house for Ruth Redding, and had her own room where she could pursue her sewing. She used to make clothes for my sisters and me, and sometimes, we weren’t too happy to be seen in them. Dad and Mom bought a second house in Ridgway, and rented the upstairs apartment. Aunt Ella visited from Michigan, and decided that Dad needed to make a place for his mother, so the tenants were moved out, and Grandma was moved into the upstairs apartment. She lived there until the early sixties, when she went to a nursing home. Once again, Aunt Ella found fault with the accommodations, and Grandma was taken to Michigan. She fell in Ella’s home, and was hospitalized, where she passed away at the age of 91, in 1967.

We have discovered some bits of family history that are counter to what we had believed in our younger years. First of all, I had believed that my grandfather Smith was just a gentleman visitor, and there seemed to be an abiding hatred of the man where Grandma was concerned. Harvey Smith was a mercantile operator in Sinnemahoning,; he had previously been married and had four children. Nothing was ever mentioned in my presence about this other family. A few years ago, my sister, Kathy, gave me a photo of Grandma and Harvey on their wedding day, but it wasn’t until we found a wedding application in Cameron County files for Grandma and Harvey that we learned he was a widower. We then found the graves of his first wife and infant daughter, but there was no trace of Harvey. The Internet has proved to be a remarkable source of information — we found the Hicks cousins this way — and, we have also found the grandchildren and great -grandchildren of Harvey’s first family. We learned that it was Harvey who filed for divorce because Grandma wouldn’t resume housekeeping with him once he had recovered from a bankruptcy situation in his store. He followed the lumbering trade, and moved several times, but Grandma would not leave the homestead to accompany him. She was obviously being influenced by her mother, as attested to in the divorce decree.

Dad would often tell of the time he returned home from work, when he was in his twenties, to find “her husband” abusing Grandma, and threw the s.o.b. down the stairs, telling him never to show his face again. We thought he might have been referring to Harvey, but with our new knowledge about their divorce when Dad was only five or six years old, and Harvey’s marriage for the third time in New York State and subsequent death in 1926, we have concluded that the fellow Dad encountered was probably a man by the name of VanWye. My sisters know about a second marriage for Grandma to someone Dad called the dumb Dutchman, but we haven’t been able to locate any records to substantiate this.

Crushed to Death in Maws of Thresher Yesterday Afternoon

Fred Thorwart has Life Crushed out when Caught in High Power Machine on Neureiter Farm at Kersey.

Fred W. Thorwart aged 30 years and residing on Apple Grove Farm at Gillen’s Station on the St Marys – Weedville road was practically instantly killed at 3:15 yesterday afternoon when he came into contact with the cutting apparatus of a threshing machine which he was operating. So sudden was the occurrence than none of the men who were helping at the threshing didn’t see how it happened.

Mr. Thorwart had taken his McCormick-Deering threshing machine to the farm of John Neureiter located about a fourth of a mile out of Kersey on the road leading to Ridgway and was engaged in threshing buckwheat. The machine beside threshing is also equipped to cut the straw, two knives being employed to do this work. These knives have a revolution of 3200 turns per minute. The self feeding belt carries the sheaves into the machine and in some manner this had become plugged. It is thought that Mr. Thorwart attempted to break the jam when in some manner he was caught and pulled into the maws of the machine, his life being crushed out instantly. The accident happened at about 3:15 o’clock pm.

Within a few seconds after he was pulled into the cutter the machine was stopped by one of the helpers and he was extricated and it was found that his heart was still beating but only for a few moments, death setting in before anything could be done.

The body was taken to the funeral home of George H. Corbe at Kersey and prepared for burial and later was taken to the grief stricken home from where the funeral will be held Friday morning.

Mr. Thorwart was born on the homestead farm June 2, 1901 the son of Mrs. and Mrs. Luke Thorwart. When he was still a small child his mother died and his father continued housekeeping. He attended the Gillen School of Fox Township and assisted at working his father’s farm. A few years ago he bought the farm from his father and has been conducting it up to the time of hiss death. He called it Apple Grove Farm on account of the very excellent orchard which is maintained there. this orchard had been a show place this summer, due to its beautiful appearance from being well kept and the abundance of fruit it carried.

On June 7, 1927 he married Miss Victoria Winslow of Benezette who survives and the union was blessed with three children, the youngest but nine months of age. they are Mildred, Loretta, and Marian. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss his father Luke Thorwart now living in town, five brothers and four sisters as follows: Luke Jr. of Johnsonburg, Frank of Bolivar NY, Norbert of Ridgway, and Herman and Charles who have been making their home with the deceased: Crescenthia (Mrs. Harry Nicklas) and Agnes Thorwart of Niagara Falls NY , Ann of Cleveland Ohio and Olive of New York City.

Death is ever a sad occurrence but when it takes a loving husband and the father of three young children, cutting him down in the very prime of life, it is doubly sad. The family has the deepest sympathy of the entire community. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from the St Marys church where services will be conducted at nine o’clock and interment will be made in the local Catholic cemetery.

General Notes: Farm Accident Fatal to Lawrence Winslow

Benezette Farmer dies in Accident

Lawrence Bernard Winslow, 62, Benezette RD farmer was killed last Thursday afternoon when hit by a bay haler. Mr. Winslow was driving a tractor with a bay haler attached on the C S Tuttle farm on Benezette Rd. According to authorities the tractor was running along the side of the road baling hay. The front wheel of the tractor hit a low spot, the shock jouncing Mr. Winslow off the seat of the tractor. The tractor and the hay baler toppled and began rolling as did Mr. Winslow. Winslow stopped rolling. The tractor missed him but the hay baler caught him at an angle across the upper back chest and neck. Floyd Woodring, 15, working with Winslow pulling hay bales off the side for loading heard the commotion but was too late to help. After the hay baler rolled over Winslow the power takeoff cut and kept the rig rolling until it stopped at the bottom of the hill. Young Woodring ran to the Tuttle farm and a doctor was summoned. The physician pronounced Winslow dead of a broken neck. He apparently died instantly the physician said. The accident occurred at 3:40 pm EST. Requiem mass was sung at 10 am Monday from St Cecilia’s Church Benezette by Rev. Stephen Dobosiewicz. Burial followed at Morningside Cemetery, DuBois. Ridgway Record July 18, 1958

Lawrence B. Winslow, 62, Thrown from Machine; Crushed by Heavy Equipment

Lawrence Bernard Winslow, 62, of Benezette, was killed instantly yesterday afternoon while baling hay at the farm of a neighbor near Benezette. The accident occurred at 3:40 pm (EST)

Dr Leo Hayes said death resulted from a broken neck and multiple injuries of the upper chest cavity.

Elk County Coroner Francis “Dutch” DePanfilis today declared Winslow’s death accidental and stated that an inquest will not be held.

Winslow was operating a Farmhall H-type tractor pulling a hay baler weighing two and one half tons. The equipment was owned by Mr. Winslow.

Mr. Winslow had completed his own haying work and was helping a neighbor on a share basis. He was almost finished when the accident occurred, it was reported.

According to an eye witness 16 year old Floyd Woodley who was assisting Winslow the fatality occurred as Winslow was baling on a side hill.

Woodley said the tractor evidently struck a slight hole in the ground throwing Winslow from the seat to the ground. The tractor was proceeding east to west along the side of the hill.

Winslow rolled in a desperate effort to escape the oncoming baler, but the machine followed him down the hill and the baler power take off crossed over his body and the back wheel of the baler rolled over his neck Woodley said.

Woodley made a futile attempt to rescue the man before the machine passed over his body but was unable to reach him in time.

Mr. Winslow was born in Benezette on Feb 12, 1896 and had been a life long resident of that community.
