General Notes: Airplane Pilot

On a flight to Reno in March of 1927, Burr Winslow had an oil line break on him as he was crossing Donner Summit. Blinded by leaking oil, he managed to cut his motor off, and glide into the Truckee emergency field. The rough, hard crusted snow on the strip caused the nose of the plane to dig into the snow, flipping over the biplane on its back. Winslow was unhurt, but the plane was badly damaged. The mail and pilot were hauled to Truckee by sleigh, and put on the train to continue the trip eastward. Claire Vance and Burr Winslow flew the most trips over the Sierra. Each logged over 1900 flights over the hump of the Sierra Others flew without major crashes and had long happy careers flying commercial passengers. Harry “The Hawk” Huking flew for United Airlines until 1971, Winslow flew commercially for decades as well.

Burr H. Winslow-- Air Mail Pilot

Air Mail Service Began: September 22, 1920

Air Mail Service Ended: June 30, 1927

Total Hours Flown: 2885.57 Total Miles Flown: 256,553

Assignments: College Park, Maryland October 16, 1920 – Chicago, Illinois February 1, 1921 – St. Louis, Missouri July 1, 1921 – Cheyenne, Wyoming July 16, 1921 – Rock Springs, Wyoming October 9, 1921 – Chicago, Illinois January 1, 1922 – San Francisco, California May 1, 1925 – Concord, California.

On August 21, 1923, Burr Winslow flew on the first coast-to-coast experimental day and night airmail service, carrying the mail from San Francisco to Reno. He carried the mail from San Francisco to Reno. Winslow took off from Crissy Field in California at 5:50 a.m., landing in Reno with 64 pounds of first-class mail at 7:46 a.m.

All of the pilots were veterans of the U.S. Army, and some saw battle up close. The battles against Sierra natural forces with new technology were as deadly as fighting a dogfight over France in The Great War. Men such as Monte Mouton, Ray Little, Claire Vance, Eugene Johnson, Burr Winslow, William Blanchfield, Rex Levisee, Jack Sharpnack, and Harry Huking flew the mails over the Sierra, leading a life of adventure and skirting danger most of the time.

Air Mail pilots flew the Donner Pass route. They followed the Southern Pacific Railroad and Lincoln Highway so that they could navigate in bad weather, and so they could be rescued quickly if their plane went down.

Air Mail pilots also navigated by compass, sight, and dead reckoning. It was truly flying by the seat of their pants. The men had to know how to fly, how to put it down and stay alive, and repair the plane miles from anywhere. They also had to know Sierra weather.

Pilots had to dress in fur lined leather jackets and pants, Eskimo boots, a lined leather flying helmet, and goggles to survive flying in good weather or bad, dry or wet. All with no heater.

The pilots were not braggarts and mostly avoided publicity, but the press kept track of their exploits and to the public they were heroes. 300 to 500 pounds of mail were stashed in the front compartment, while the pilot sat in the back, behind the wing, adding to his visibility and horizontal stability.

I (B. Nay) had the honor of meeting George in May 30, 2010. He is 94 years old and living at the Mulberry Rest Home. I came announced and a stranger. George was very alert and a very kind gentleman. We talked about his family and his life. He was a WW2 vet. He never married. He mentioned two homes he grew up in One- a yellow brick home on East Mahoning and Dinsmore St, the other a red brick on East Mahoning and Greenwood. He also lived in the Winslow Mansion for many years as an adult. He mentioned that Carpenter’s wife Elizabeth Colburn used to smoke a pipe which is still in the family somewhere. It was a relatively large pipe handed down from Elizabeth’s father Reuben Colburn. He said something about half a banana and a bull engraved on the pipe ( I got a little lost here). He talked about his Joseph Wood Winslow side being Methodist and Baptist, while the James Winslow side converted to the Catholic faith. This was because a Catholic priest had lived with James for a while and converted him.

General Notes: Newspaper Article

Article from a newspaper, possibly the “Punxsutawney Spirit”, reporting on news of a narrow escape from a dormitory fire by Eugene Hale Winslow, grandson of Reuben Colburn Winslow of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on 16 Nov. 1901. A copy of the article was found at the Jefferson County Historical Society in May 2009.

“Faced A Horrible Death."

“Narrow Escape of Eugene Winslow from a Five-Story Window."

“Last Saturday, Hon. R. C. Winslow, of this place, received a telegram from his grandson, Eugene Winslow, that the dormitory in which he lodged at Yale College had been destroyed by fire, that he had lost all of his belongings and narrowly escaped with his life. It was not until the arrival of the evening papers that his friends became aware of the great peril in which he was placed."

General Notes: Telegram

“A telegram to the Pittsburgh Sunday Gazette, dated New Haven, November 16, gives the following account of the thrilling incident:

‘On the window sill of the fifth story of the Hutchinson student apartment house, fire on all sides of him, above and below, Eugene Hale Winslow, of Punxsutawney, Pa, a Yale Sophomore, faced death to-day. The house was ablaze in the three upper stories, one being under his room, and he was cut off from escape. A thousand Yale students in the street below shouted in chorus, “Don’t jump; keep your nerve. Help is coming.”

‘For fear that Winslow could not await their coming, the firemen held a rope net over the concrete walk below the window. Dense clouds of smoke poured up, hiding Winslow at intervals. During these minutes the firemen struggled to work with the ladders through the network of telephone and telegraph wires. In the street, the extension ladder refused to work, and in desperation the firemen tugged at the wires that were caught and held in rusted grooves. Winslow raised his hands in supplication once more and made ready to drop to the net.

‘The ladder at that moment reached him. Winslow clasped his arms about the ladder, gripped it at the sides with his knees and slid down. The crowd shouted to him, “Hold fast and go slow.” His feet struck the first joint in the ladder with force and his hold was almost lost. A few rounds further down the firemen met him and he was carried down in a fainting condition and carried to a physician’s house where he was treated.'”

Eugene grew up without a father so R.C. Winslow helped to raise Eugene and entrusted to him and his wife (in the year of 1909) the land this lovely Bankers Tutor rests upon. R.C. also provided the money to lay the foundation of the home. Margaret’s father, Samuel A. Rinn, a well known coal operator and banker and one of Punxsutawney’s most successful business men, provided the money and built the rest of the home. It is believed this was done as a wedding gift to the couple. However, the wing of the home which houses the Victorian Tutor Executive Suite/B&B was built on to the main house a few years later. It was built, as per say, a private suite for Eugene and connected to the main house by two passageways. Eugene was said to be, a very private person and would retreat to his private suite while Margaret would entertain her guests in the main area of the home.

The couple resided in this home raising three children, Samuel Rinn Winslow, John C. Winslow and Anna Martha Winslow, Carlton, Hughes. Eugene H. Winslow died at the age of 81 on November 12, 1962 and Margaret later passed at the age of 78 in October of 1966. The home remained with the Winslow heirs until it was sold to the Dereume family on the 12th day of April 1970. It remained in the Dereume family until May 28, 2004 when it was sold to the present owners Duane & Nancy Miller who continues to restore and preserve this one of a kind beautiful Victorian Bankers Tutor. It is their hope some day that one of the heirs of Eugene and Margaret will revisit this wonderful home with stories to tell and pictures of days gone by.
