General Notes: Biography

William Keene Winslow was born on his father’s, Charles Keene Winslow, farm in Benezette on 1875. During his youth he helped his father clear and farm this land. Later in life he would purchase the homestead making his home here. William had a serious injury when he accidentally stepped backwards into a hay chute on the barn floor and fell to the basement causing him to be paralyzed. The doctor, feeling that he had fractured his spine, made arrangements to have him taken to the University Hospital in Philadelphia. As this was a matter of urgency, preparations were quickly made to have Winslow taken to Philadelphia by train. The train was given direct right-of-way and made the run in record time. Winslow was met at Thirty Second and Market Streets by an ambulance, and rushed to the hospital. An operation was immediately performed, but Winslow died. His wife Mary, sick with cancer, died within the year, never knowing the fate of her husband.

From the Renova Daily Record: Winslow was taken to the hospital on Saturday in a special train after he had fallen down stairs at home. The run between Driftwood and that city was made in record time, the train having been given the right of way.

Their Winslow homestead is no longer owned by the family but is being currently in 2010 renovated. It is located at the bottom of the valley on Dewey Road in Winslow Hill. Like other farmers in the past, the Winslows would rent out a bedroom to the hunters during the hunting season. This homestead had a large bedroom on the second floor which contained over 6 beds for the hunters. Some hunters also stayed in the attic which was made into a bedroom. This rent income was a valuable cash resource for many farmers in the area.

General Notes: Obituary

In Loving Remembrance of Mary Winslow died June 9, 1914 Aged 57 years.

Gone but not forgotten

A precious one from us has gone,

A voice we loved is still,

A place is vacant in our home,

Which never can be filled,

God in His wisdom has recalled,

The boon his love had given,

And though the body slumbers here,

The soul is safe in Heaven

JOHNSONBURG PRESS 12/1948 PIONEER BURG MERCHANT DIES IN PUNXSUTAWNEY

Johnsonburg’s first department store proprietor, William E. Zierden, was buried in Punxsutawney, Tuesday afternoon following funeral services there. He had made his home there for many years, died Saturday afternoon in Adrian Hospital at the age of 85. He retired from active business life in the Paper City in 1917 when he sold the Zierden Store on Market Street to the late J.J. Donnelly after association with the town from the earliest years in 1888. Born in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia in 1864, he came to the United States with his parents when but a year and a half old. The family settled in Williamsport where he attended school, afterwards completing his education at what is now Lock Haven State Teachers College. At the age of 19 he entered business, taking a position with J.E. Putman, prominent lumberman and merchant of Caledonia, Elk County. In 1886 he started a store of his own there, two years later selling it to come to Johnsonburg. He erected on Center street the first brick store building in town shortly after arrival here, but in 1890 his rapidly expanding business required larger quarters and he planned the three-story block on Market street which was constructed in 1892. Within a few years the store was spoken of as being the largest distributor of merchandise in this end of the state, required a large staff of clerks, used two delivery wagons, and had its own warehouse convenient to its own J.R.R. siding. Mr. Zierden was always close to the business life of the early days in Johnsonburg, organizing and being the first president of the Board of trade in 1915. He leaves his wife and four sons and five daughters. Mrs. Samuel Morgan, of Johnstown; Mrs. John W.
